Brinell Meter Operation

The Eitzen Portable Brinell Meter operation is based on the principle of action and reaction.

A steel ball of 10 mm. diameter (B) is placed between two surfaces of metal, one (S) of known Brinell hardness, and the other (X) of unknown hardness, (X) being the material under investigation. Any pressure exerted against the assemblage of the three, presses the ball (B) with the same force into the surface (S) as into (X), and the sizes of the indentations obtained are in the direct proportion to the Brinell hardness of the two metals.

Direct-reading tables are furnished with the kit, showing 'Brinell Hardness Units' for the material under test, depending on the ratio of the indentations produced (by means of a hammer blow). A measuring microscope for determining the diameter of the impressions also form a part of the standard equipment.
